Victoria 'Posh Spice' Beckham revealed two surprises during New York Fashion Week. . .
#1 She has a new haircut, resembling Mia Farrow's pixie syle from her Rosemary's Baby/ Frank Sinatra days. . . And it actually looks really cute.
#2 Beckham has a clothing line: an honest-to-goodness collection of 15 dresses. And here's the real shocker: every one is impeccable. They're chic, artfully tailored, curve hugging, knockout dresses: all of which Victoria herself would certainly wear, as would many luxury loving ladies.
So few celebrity 'designers' actually deliver the goods (with a few exceptions being Gwen Stefani's LAMB, the Olsens' Elizabeth and James and the Row, and Sienna and Savannah Miller's twenty8twelve). Victoria Beckham provides further proof that it can be done right... Hopefully JLO, Beyonce, and Jessica Simpson are paying attention.

Of course, while speaking of Topshop's US website launch, I have to mention the store's Kate Moss Fall/ Winter collection, which debuted along with the site. I think this is Kate's best collection yet for Topshop, with its moody rocker feel, a la Anita Pallenberg. Unlike the previous collections, I've actually got my eye on a few of these pieces: specifically the black fringe jacket and circus stripe jeans.

It may be a few more months before the US gets its own Topshop, with the New York Soho store opening this November (originally slated for an October opening, the date seems to be getting pushed back. . . ) However, you won't have to wait that long to purchase the store's fashion forward pieces stateside, as the United States Topshop/ Topman websites have finally arrived!
I know we've been able to order from the UK site for sometime, but now there's no more fussing over overseas shipping or mentally converting pounds to dollars. I'm also expecting the banishment of terms like 'waistcoat.'

Lately, I am sadly confined to a budget that makes even the reasonably priced Marc by Marc Jacobs currently unaffordable. . . I was crazy for his Fall/ Winter collection, with its combination of mod/beatnik styles mixed with punky new wave (hitting all of my favorite subcultures).
Recently, while hunting ebay for a leather dress, (the NY Spring 2009 shows are looking heavy on bodycon 90s styles) I came across this great Marc by Marc Jacobs find from the current collection. I love the zipper details and the funnel neck. And pockets! Leave it to Marc to make the prospect of wearing leather totally casual and unintimidating.
The bidding starts at a fraction of the original price. Go ahead and bid, I promise I won't hate you.

Band of Outsiders

In all honesty, it takes a lot to get me excited about menswear. My interest was majorly peeked, however, when I read that Jason Schwartzman will be appearing in the upcoming ads for menswear label of the moment: Band of Outsiders. Schwartzman undenieably brings a cetain amount of indie cred and comedic cache to any project he participates in, and with Band of Outsider's charmingly retro sensabilities, this is perhaps the perfect pairing. Schwartzman aptly demonstrates that Band of Outsiders is the only label we're dying to see our boyfriends wearing. Or, maybe we're all just dying for Jason Shwarztman to be our boyfriend!

Celebrate Valentine's Day with London Fashion Week's finest: Gareth Pugh's Fall 2008 collection. I'm in love with his high lux warrior girls. Who, other than Pugh, could turn PVC into intricate oragami folds, or make goat hair look so terribley chic? (I'm particullarly smittern with those gloves!). This may be the boy's most wearable collection yet, and if I had my way, I'd be wearing it all (minus the post apocolyptic gothic pancake make-up, of course)!

I've long been a fan of houndscheck/ houndstooth, and particullarly love this jacket for magnifiying the pattern to a great extreme.
Likewise, I appreciate Gwen Stefani's use of the check to establish a mod and 2 tone vibe for LAMB's spring/summer 08 collection, which is beggining to arrive in stores.

This Dior ad has got me on the prowl for a fine animal print trench. I imagine myself throwing this chic number on with a beret, heels, and not much else. . . What better to wear on a day off, running errands and sipping tea at cafes around town? It could be my go-to wardrobe staple for those nothing-to-wear days, warranting a fashion splurge. However, since Dior is sadly out of this shop girl's budget, I'm considering some similar substitutions (priced as such that I could still make rent!).

This Roberto Cavalli for H&M zebra trench can still be found on ebay. It pales in comparison to the Dior, and isn't as long as I'd like. . . But is still a feasible option.

L.A.M.B.'s 'mama cheetah' trench is also appealing, though I suppose not as graphically chic as a zebra pattern.
I'm eagerly hunting other options. . . If anyone spies a note-worthy zebra/ cheetah/ giraffe print trench- please send a note my way!

I'm in love. Or at least mildly obsessed, with COURREGES'"Lunettes Eskimo" sunglasses. First introduced to me in that iconic 1965 William Klein photograph, these sunglasses seem to make a mod-ified reference to the first ever sunglasses, worn by Eskimos. These otherworldly show pieces reappeared in my subconscious recently when I spied this original pair on ebay, starting at $1300... True love, it seems, must wait.

Ostrich leather popped up all over the Fall RTW runways, particularly via Gucci and Dior. The speckled skin is occasionally criticized for looking like an overblown case of measles on leather, but I'm partial to it, equating ostrich with the same kind of lux as snake and lizard.

I've never been much of a Karl Lagerfeld fan. I just can't seem to warm up to a man known for shielding himself behind a hand held fan and publicly stating his distaste for for women larger than a size 4.
However, this spread in the Autum/Winter Numero Homme par Lagerfeld won my affection with its daguerreotype style photos of these Jane Austin era gentleman. These vignettes reminded me of every woman's true ideal: the dashing Mr. Darcy. I dare you, take one look at these images and try not to fall in love.

God Bless you, John Galliano, for giving us some color for fall, and saving the world from what could've been a very drab season. . . Lucky for us, the master of couture showed a ready to wear collection for Christian Dior full of classic glamour . . . Fur trimmed citron frocks with 1940's tailoring, tilt hats to high heaven, and platform heels in exotic skins Ava Gardner would've loved. (Whoever said platforms were on the way out - Was it you, Vogue? - was thankfully mistaken).

In general, I don't watch awards shows. Their a bit dull, and certainly over-rated (take the Grammy's for example. . . Elvis Presley never won a Grammy. Milli Vannilli did). Still, I'm always interested in who wore what, and for this year's Oscars I'm going to have to award Gwyneth Paltrow as the queen of the red carpet. This Zac Posen dress is simply stunning, and refreshingly not strapless.

Turbans. . . I wasn't entirely sold on this Prada inspired spring/summer 2007 trend, though I appreciated the strong retro glamour it brought to the runways. After feeling major inspiration from W's March noir-style beach spread, I realize I am indeed a turban girl. I wore a purple vintage SAKS 5th Ave turban today, and though it received mixed reviews, I felt as glam as Mrs. Fowler from The Women!

By now, you've probably heard of Tom's, the the simple canvas shoes inspired by traditional Argentinian styles. With spring approaching, I've been thinking what will work best for summer bike riding and beach strolling. Tom's seem to be just the ticket with their extremely reasonable prices and worthy cause (for every pair purchased, Tom's donates a pair to a South American child in need). Really, the only thing left to consider is which color to purchase!

Last night I went to see the much anticipated Factory Girl. Finally, I got to see the movie that influenced two seasons of fashion and made Sienna Miller a superstar before the film was even released! I'm eager to hear what everyone's thoughts are on the film. . . Good fashion? Honest depiction of characters? I must say I was overall impressed with what could've been an over-hyped, celebrity fueled disaster.

I must admit that my first impression of Spring 2007's runway darling, Christopher Kane, was that the emperor has no clothes. . . However, the more I spy his clinging neon bandage dresses popping up in my favorite magazines, the more I seem to like them. They draw to mind something Grace Jones might have worn in her modeling heyday. My favorites from the collection are the dresses with the simplest, cleanest sleek lines and streamlined adornments like a single zipper.

With all of the excitement surrounding fashion week, I'm dying to post on some of my favorite looks. . . So far, none of the usual suspects are thrilling me with their Fall 07 designs, so perhaps more on that later?
What I am really excited about currently is Lily Allen! I caught her on SNL last week, and realized she is indeed worthy of all of the hype BUST and NYLON have been showering on her. The girl has PERSONALITY (so rare among pop stars these days), vintage dress wearing/ British tough girl style, and humanizing baby fat. I love her and her fun danceable debut album. Mucho recommended.

While perusing the latest NYLON (the one unfortunately bearing Sienna Miller on its cover), I was excited to read about an upcoming collaboration between Anna Sui and Victoria's Secret. Like most ladies, I'm a huge Anna Sui fan and have been rather pleased with Victoria's Secret's other collaborations with the likes of Betsey Johnson and Chantal Thomas.
But so far, the Anna Sui collaboration is looking a little less than stellar, though. I haven't seen anything worth charging to my Angels account. . . Perhaps there will be more?

Gaultier's Saints and Sinners

Like Galliano, Jean Paul Gaultier's Spring '07 Couture collection was out to remind us what couture is all about! As a big fan of religious icon imagery, I was amazed with this breathtaking show of well-studied religious imagery. Gaultier made his models into statue-esque saints with makeup making them appear almost waxen.
But beneath the pomp and circumstance of halo headgear and blood-stained tears, there were certainly some very wearable pieces in the collection. It would be no surprise to see Dita modeling one of these numbers off of the runway. Though, more than anything, I'd love to take a whirl in one of those halos!

Galliano's Kabuki Girls

John Galliano's glorious origami swans dazzled in his latest couture collection for Christian Dior. Galliono has given us the kind of theatrical fantasy that we've come to expect from the King of Couture. Mixing Dior's New Look silhouettes with traditional asian prints, outrageous origami folds, royalty worthy headpieces and heavenly theatrical make-up. . . This is the grandest I've seen from Galliano since his Dior couture retrospective for Fall 2005. I can't wait to see these looks editorialized, or on the red carpet. It will take a woman with real character to wear them well. . . Paging Gwen, Dita, and Chloe!

2. Complementary tamales and enchilladas at the hotel.
3. Amazing vintage finds, including a 60's Pucci mini dress and a cashmere 50's red sweater embroidered with white POODLES!!!
4. Delicious BBQ, and visiting with friends who live in a 40's white adobe ranch house covered floor to cieling with mid century kitsch.
5. Snow on the mountains and all over the desert ground. . . Glad I brought my cowboy boots!

6 Weird Things about me:

1. My college roommate and I had a 100 plus item list of male characteristics we deemed undateable. This 'undateable list' included such things as: no guys with only reptilian pets, no one in more than 3 bands, and no little socks.
2. I've read all of the Princess Diaries books.
3. I hate it when someone puts a lemon in my water glass at restaurants. This displeasure is intensified when the cup is plastic.
4. My parents, aunts, uncles, and grandparents have always had poodles and only poodles. My poodle love is hereditary.
5. I've never had my ears pierced and only wear clip-ons.
6. I have yet to go further west than Chicago. Somehow I've existed soley on the east coast these last 24 years.

Can I just say how delicious and refreshing the February issue of Elle is? For one thing: Fashion goddess GWEN graces its cover. Then there's my all time favorite Project Runway-er, Jeffrey, with his long over-do interview and spread, along with enough eye-popping color, 60s mod style, and general eye candy to quench my craving for fashion inspiration. I love seeing all of the Spring/Summer runway looks editorialized!
And PS: Lady Gwen also reins on the cover of BUST this month. Not to be missed!

I know, celebrity gossip is kind of icky. . . But I was honestly kind of sad to hear that Dita and Marilyn are splitting up. I loved seeing pictures of this unique and extremely photogenic couple at fashion events, (There seriously seemed to be a time when you couldn't open WWD without reading about Dita).
Now, after a fabulous Vogue spread covering their wedding, and a little over a year of marriage, the couple are finished.
In further icky news, Manson appears to be dating nineteen year old Evan-Rachel-Wood (of Thirteen and Running with Scissors fame). The weirdest part is that she appears to be mimicking Dita's retro style. . .

From the director of a Hard Day's Night, this is a charming, silly story of quintessential London Youth: mods, rockers, and a neurotic artist who paints everything white. Really, the film is worth watching for its opening sequence alone: the chauvinistic rocker roommate with his zombie legion of Mary Tyler Moore-ish female admirers.

Every week ebay seller timelessvixen lists an immaculate collection of 1950s and 60s dresses and coats up for auction. The styles range from debutante prom-queen dresses with sweat heart necklines, to fur collared Lilli Anne suits, and retro space age knit mini dresses. Often her most impressive items end up getting bid out of my price range, but I always love to see what she's selling! These are a couple of my favorites items from this week. Speaking of Proenza Schouler. . . I know we're all eagerly anticipating their Go International for Target line (due to arrive in stores sometime in February. . . Anyone know the specific date?) I've seen previews of the collection on blogs such as Oh Joy!, and so far the only pieces I'm majorly coveting are the bustier-top dresses that the duo are known for. This picture makes it look like the dresses might be coming in several different colors! I haven't been this excited about Target's Go International since the debut of Luella's poof dresses! Get ready to charge up your Target card!

I must give full credit to Shiny Squirrel for introducing me to Emilio De La Morena in one of her recent posts. I was so excited about his designs that I had to pass the word along! I love this structure of his dresses. . . Some of the bustier tops remind me of Versace and Proenza Schouler, while the the futuristic looks of the Spring 07 desings had me thinking of the latest by Balenciaga. Regardless, the obvious craftsmanship and exciting silhouettes have me absolutely hooked!
(And isn't the black 'cut out' dress totally remeniscent of the safety-pinned Versace Elizabeth Hurley wowed in during the 90's? I love seeing that 'cling' is back!)

I must admit, I only recently learned of Isabel and Ruben Toledo: the New York couple made up of two well known artists: a designer and illustrator. Isabel was recently named new Creative Director for Anne Klein (perhaps Macy's has something refreshing and interesting headed their way), while Rubin's fashion illustrations appear in many of our favorite magazines.
One of the most intersting things about this couple, is that they work together, seeming to operate as each others muse. There is something so very bohemian and timeless about them that I find very romantic.
The Toledos are featured in February's Harper's Bazaar, which covers their fabulous midtown loft, which they use as a home and workspace.
After readinig the recent article, I realized that I've admired Isabel's style long before I knew who she was, when I originally read a November 2005 issue of Vogue (and saw this picture of her). She inspired me to purchase vintage sailor pants two years ago, and wear them with platforms!

My friend, Tom, is a vintage postcard collector/ dealer, which means I get some very special cast-offs, (such as vintage valentines, 1950s western scenes, and a good half dozen unused Copacabana post cards!). Today he came back from a buying trip and brought me this poodle card. I believe she's a German poodle (Germany is where the breed originated from, not France, as is often believed). Wherever she's headed, she's certainly traveling in style!

Move over SJP and JLO. .. Coty Cosmetics recently announced its latest celebrity fragrance maven, whose name needs no abbreviation. Gwen Stefani is scheduled to debut her own fragrance, via Coty, in Fall 2007. At a time that reports indicate celebrity fragrance sales are on the decline, I have to wonder about the motivations behind this collaboration between L.A.M.B. and Coty. Will a new No Doubt or solo album correspond with the scent's debut? Will there be an ad campaign running in the pages of our favorite fashion mags? And most importantly, what kind of name will this scent have? (Tick Tock? Hella Good? S-E-R-I-O-U-S?)I'm eager to hear your predictions!

I've been having a lot of love for Frye lately, having recently purchased a pair of their classic, indestructible leather boots and some ballet-style sandals (thanks to Grandad and Aunt Liz's Christmas gift certificates!).
I really admire the quality and traditional craftsmanship behind Frye's designs. My horsey years have given me a thorough respect for quality leather (the smell of a well stocked tack room still makes me swoon!), which Frye undoubtedly uses in its work. Finally, with my Fryes, I feel confident that I've made a couple of shoe purchases that will last beyond this season!

Lippazaners on tour!

Growing up in a very equine-centric family (my pony Baby and I were Large Pony over fences champions throughout the 1990's), I fell in love with the Lipizzaner Stallions of Vienna's Spanish Riding School at an early age. Their impeccable style and unusual grace wooed me, as did Margueritte Henry's classic book: White Stallion of Lipizza, which further romanticized these amazing animals. (Henry is also the author of the beloved Misty of Chincoteauge books).
Obviously then, I was excited when I heard that the magnificent 'dancing horses' from Vienna are currently on tour throughout the United States. Their performances are an amazing tradition in motion, that I dare say you don't have to be horse crazy to appreciate!

Slim Slack Attack!

I am admittedly an American Apparel junkie. With one of their shops being in my neighborhood, there's seldom a week that goes by without me making multiple purchases of their soft cotton basics.
Aside from the consistent quality of their products, I appreciate American Apparel's social conscience and firm made-in-America stance. Sure, the company isn't without fault. . . The overexposed pre-pubescent teens in their adds creep me out, too, but I'm willing to laugh that off.
Tonight my ever fashion-forward friend, Kyle, showed up to dinner wearing American Apparel's RED unisex slim slacks. Yes, people, the company is going into denim and the results look GOOD. Unfortunately, the slacks are all ready sold out on the website, and I'm unsure as to whether they'll be available in stores anytime soon. Keep checking American Apparel site for more info. And count me in with those waiting with baited breath for these things to hit the store racks.

It would hardly be fair to praise the fearless fashion choices of Karen O without giving due credit to the mad scientist behind her stage costumes. Karen dresses almost exclusively in the designs of Christian Joy, a longtime friend and collaborator, who twists vintage prom dresses and a slew of unlikely materials into a one of a kind wardrobe for the lady of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
Not all of Joy's designs consist of theatrical, overstated treatments though. Many of the items available on her website are geared toward a look of understated monochromatic minimalism, including slinky futuristic hooded one pieces and sack-like 'bean' dresses (which sold out in no time after being featured in NYLON!). Recently I've spied some tartan plaid accessories in the Christian Joy online store. . . Are you brave enough to rock this statement making waist cincher?

With all the best dressed lists appearing as this year ends, I feel compelled to add my own two cents as to who has mad some fabulously unique fashion statements in 2006.
My top three ladies: Gwen Stefani, Dita von Teese, and Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. These three fearless dressers seem incapable of bending to trends or getting lost in a crowd.
Pay attention: these style originals are icons in the making!

Mentioning the Quilts of Gee's Bend in one of my earlier posts go me thinking about another exceptional American craft collective: Project Alabama. I haven't heard much about this group (headed by Natalie Chanin) since their Spring '06 collection, and was disappointed to find their website is under construction. I'm still admiring what I saw in their Bryant Park debut: traditional quilt making craftsmanship spun into timeless feminine clothing with character and soul. If anyone knows what Project Alabama is up to lately, please drop me a line!

Upon seeing this Diesel ad in the latest issue Vogue, my coworker declared that I MUST have these jeans. It's true, I have been known to wear the high waisted tapered Jordache jeans of yesteryear. . . But this Diesel pair takes high waistedness to a whole new level (as in you almost need not wear a shirt). They remind me of the ones Scarlett Johansson modeled for Imitation of Christ, or better yet, something a fashionable cowgirl of the 1950's would have worn (paging Dale Evans!). I may just need them after all!

I must admit I'm having a little too much fun recovering from the Holiday by being a homebody alongside my cats and new Pride and Prejudice DVD. However, if you're feeling ready to go out of the house again, I recommend checking out this show tonight. The Carbonas are one of Atlanta's best rock n'roll bands (known to play some mean Zero Boys covers).
I love the flyer for the show, featuring two Carbonas: Gentleman Jesse and Greg King, taken from one of my favorite covers of Maximum Rock and Roll.

The day of the 'supers' (as in Cindy, Naomi, Nikki, and Linda) may be over, but there's still some personality to be found on the runways. . . Model Cecilia Mendez, has been one of my favorite faces since I spied her in WWD over the summer. I admire her quirky Audrey Hepburn style, so clearly emphasized by her nymphish pixie hair cut. In a biz where so many cat walkers lack identity, Cecilia's 'Funny Face,' distinguishes her as a gal with character and a model worth watching!

Leave it to Vogue's Editor at Large, Andre Leon Talley, to make the connection between Diane Von Furstenberg's Spring '07 ready-to-wear collection and the legendary traveling exhibit, Quilts of Gee's Bend.
Both are splashed with eye popping colors and whimsical patterns capable of brightening any day.
I saw the quilts at Atlanta's High Museum last spring, and was taken by the unique color palates and patterns as well as the stories behind the designs and the unexpected use of materials (including previously worn dresses and blue jeans!).
Unsurprisingly, I'm also quite fond of DVF's spring collection of colorful, fun, feminine classics.

Yesterday, something possessed me to go to the mall. Foolish, I know, Christmas is days away. . . But I thought Andrew just might have to have a Ben Sherman from Urban Outfitters to round out his collection of presents.
I was wrong, so wrong! The entire scene at the mall was so nauseatingly overwhelming that I swore to myself that my mall days were over! I found nothing at Anthropologie or Urban Oufitters for myself or anyone else on my list. It was one of those days where everything seemed overpriced and poorly made. (Yes, vintage clothing has spoiled me greatly).
So for now, I'm on a mission to buy only from independently owned boutiques that carry UNIQUE, quality products. . . So I was elated today, when Seamsters' blogger Amy recommended a store named Creatures of Comfort. She mentioned that they carry (my latest obsession) Eley Kishimoto, but they also stock tons of other amazing designers(Chie Mihara, Imitation of Christ, and United Bamboo, to name a few) and at prices that are not insane!
So here's the game plan for 2007: Shop Creatures of Comfort and stock my closet with amazing finds!

Cindy Lauper came into my work today, acting as loud and brash as you might expect, and wearing platinum blond hair and gobs of eye makeup. She became completely recognizable once she started screaming to her companion about how she's too much of an old hag to still be singing Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.
She bought several vintage aprons, fabric, and a fab 1960's purple velvet hooded coat.
Best of all, she complemented my outfit, and asked if it was vintage (no) and what it was made of (denim). High praise from a 1980's style icon!

Gwen Stefani's L.A.M.B. luxury leather bags have arrived at Nordstrom! I'm torn between all of the great colors and styles. . . They all have a bit of a 1970's Gucci feel which I love, and the white bags especially catch my eye (though I'd surely have one discolored in a matter of days. . .).

I'm in love with their entire Spring/Summer '07 collection! It's a mad mix of sixties silhouettes and seventies patterns that the Brady girls would love! It was nearly impossible to choose just a few images to post here. . . I imagine it'll be even harder to decide which to buy!

I was feeling a little nostalgic today for the framed Marimekko geometric fabric panels my parents hung in the rec room when I was a kid. They were dizzying swirls of yellow and orange. . . I only wish I had them today! Unfortunately they went to the Salvation Army before I was old enough to appreciate them.
I did discover a great new source for mid century textiles on ebay, though! A couple out of Atlanta are selling a load of vintage fabrics ranging from 1940's bark cloth to mod 1960's and psychedelic 70's Eames patterns. Their auctions are listed under the name outsidearts , and at great prices! The ones above are a few of my favorites.

Being that holiday time of the year, I've found myself doing some shopping at Ten Thousand Villages, picking up handmade gifts for friends and relatives. I absolutely love their nativity scenes from all over the world, particularly these two from Peru and Sri Lanka.

Once upon a time I actually found a pair of 1940's red leather platform sandals to fit my feet. They were stunning: eliciting complements everywhere we went and bumping my height up to a statuesque 6'3. Sadly, yet inevitably, I wore them to death.
Since a piece like that isn't bound to come around but once in a lifetime, imagine my delight when I discovered a company that specializes in reproducing classic vintage shoe styles! Remix Vintage Shoes, out of California, carries hand made leather reproductions in styles ranging from the 1920's to the 1950's (and in every color you can dream of!).
As a happy owner of several pairs, I can vouch that they're incredibly comfortable, look like the real thing, and are available at a price you can live with.

I'm a sucker for all things tacky, fabulous, and Americana, so it should be no surprise that I was mesmerized by a special on PBS last night, featuring some of country music's biggest female stars. Loretta Young, Dolly Parton, and Tammy Wynette dazzled in archival 1960's footage, wearing citrus colored chiffon mini dress, rhinestones, and big big hair.

If you're like me, and can't get enough of viewing country music in all of its bespangled finery, check out Vinyl Hayride: Country Music Album Covers 1947-1989. Transformers: more than meets the eye

I finally got around to watching the finale of Hussen Chalayan's Spring 07 'ready to wear' collection on Youtube this afternoon. Ever since hearing about these mechanically interchanging dresses, I felt certain that the future of fashion had arrived.
I must say I enjoyed the spectacle of these transformers, which changed shape while their models stood eerily still. It was fashion performance art, like nothing I'd seen since Shalom Harlow's white dress was robotically spray painted in the finale of Alexander McQueen's Spring '99 show.

Though this was a part of a ready to wear show, I strongly doubt any version of Chalayan's microchiped dresses will be available at a Neiman Marcus anytime soon.(The originals are all ready promised to museums). It may be a long time coming before any kind of self-altering dress is available to the masses.
In the mean time, if you're itching for a garment with infinite possibilities, why not shop for American Apparel's wrap dresses, which give the wearer so many different options. (Don't you just love watching those 'how to' videos while you're in the store?!) Perhaps, the future was actually all ready here all along. . . Minus the computer chips.

Yawn yawn yawn. Finally watched 'Blow Up' last night, and you know, I was pretty dissapointed. Not nearly enough Peggy Moffitt or fab 60's fashions. And. . . I just didn't get it. I'm an art school alumnis: watching the dark room scenes gave me flashbacks, and I loved watching the models pose in their Gurnheart outfits, but otherwise. . . Someone wanna tell me what I'm missing?
And PS: Whoever said Jane Birkin is the 'star' of this movie must have been mistaken. Whatever possesed Hermes to name their infamous Birkin bag after her?

Nearly every month I find myself spending a little time with Andrew's latest copy of Maximum Rock n'roll. I love catching up with George Tabb's column, reading reviews of friends' recently released records, browsing the scene report, top ten lists, and taking that overall trip down memory lane where I'm a sixteen year old punk rock girl in love with fast music and idealism.
In this latest December issue I found an article by Layla Gibbon that wasn't just purse nostalgia. In fact it was completely relevant to the way I've been feeling lately. . .
"I don't think my goal is to stay emotionally and developmentally backwards and just be a perpetual useless adolescent. But as I get older and find myself doing the things that I could have done pretty much at any age without a BA, and yet also find myself a lot more content and happy then I was when on the path to Great Achievements in Corporate Adulthood, I find myself thinking about boring shit like this ALL The TIME."
Well, that makes two of us. Thank you Layla Gibbon. You made my week.

I must admit I have been crazy for mini dresses lately: my collection of 60's shifts and barely there minis has been dangerously expanding. Discovering Kate and Kass' line recently hasn't helped my addiction (or my wallet)! I absolutely adore their Twiggy meets Mia Farrow designs.

Pretty Pretty Peggy

Since cropping my hair and dying it black, I've found more and more style inspiration from the fantastic Peggy Moffitt. More than a mere model, Peggy was a muse, an artist, and an icon. Plus, no one else ever looked as righteously feminist posing topless as she did: modeling Rudi Gernreich's infamous 'monokini.'

I don't think I'm the only one taking fashion tips from this icon, either. Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs certainly owes some style credit to Moffitts' legendary Vidal Sassoon bowl cut!

And speaking of Sci-fi influenced clothing to love. . . I was thrilled to discover today that one of my fav DIY designers, Rebecca Turbow of SAFE, has updated her online store. I am totally coveting one of her dresses or coats: perfect for a party on the moon, or rocking out all night to your fav garage band.
With each collection, Rebecca's designs are becoming more and more polished and tailored while retaining their avante garde conceptual origins. I can't wait to see what she's come up with for Spring '07!

Cyborgs rule, OK!

New Zealand designer Mala Brajkovic has won my praise merely by titling her Spring 2007 collection "Cyborgs rule, OK!". Supposedly inspired by retro sci-fi films like Metropolis, I'm imagining some fabulous retro futuristic glam. Unfortunately I've been having a hard time finding many images of Mala's work.

Her website is currently under construction, with a tongue and cheek claim that they ". . .currently have an army of robots working on this site."

If anyone knows where I can view more of her collection, let me know! And meanwhile I'll be checking the website until those robots are finished!

Rachel Antonoff and Alison Lewis, the designing duo behind Mooka Kinney, seem to be on a mission to fill your closet with cuteness. Their designs are right on key with the 1970's retro childhood nostalgia/ thrift store chic that's currently so popular. .. I know some might think Kate Spade can be a bit too classic preppy. . But I love her whimsical designs, many of which seem to channel the simple elegance of the 1960's. Needless to say, I was delighted to get her holiday catalog in the mail today.
I think I might be in love with the apple green leather mittens trimmed in mink fur and lined in cashmere. . . But I wouldn't say no to these ladylike ones above, either! Santa, take note.

Irregular Choice Shoes. . . They tend to be hit or miss. Some styles are decadent little works of art for your feet. Others, look like they couldn't possibley have been designed on planet Earth.
Either way, the label specializes in delightfully off-beat styles for those who crave a little bit more from a shoe. I adore these striped boots. . . They remind me of something Rod Stewart might have worn in his Faces' days: glam rock meets psychedelia. I just hope they won't end up looking too Motley Crue. In a bad way.

On dreary rainy days like today a fashionable umbrella seems most essential. This victorian inspired one from Anthropologie suits me just fine, but the $158 price tag doesn't suit my bank account at all. I'd love to find a similarly fab, cheaper alternative. Any suggestions?
